TARS education officers were recently in the mid-north coast, and and have reported a very successful round of education sessions. Pat spoke at two Dementia Awareness Week events, held at the Bowling Club Port Macquarie, and the Community Centre at Coffs Harbour. She was pleased to meet many active seniors, carers, community workers, allied health workers, residents from hostels and retirement villages, as well as those diagnosed with or directly affected by dementia.
Thank you to Carol and Judy from Alzheimers Australia (NSW) who organized the community events, and to the staff at both these venues who looked after us so well.
We also spoke to staff from the Respite and Carelink Centre at Macksville, Community Aged Care Packages providers in Coffs Harbour, and two aged care facilities where both residents and staff had the opportunity to hear about residents' rights and responsibilities, and the complaints process in the event they need assistance to address any concerns they have about their care or services they are receiving in aged care. We had the added pleasure of meeting two residents who were one hundred and one, and one hundred and six years old.
We were able to meet staff at new facilities in the area and offer education sessions for a future trip up north.
For the CACPs folks, we were able to pass on your concerns for the need of many more packages in your region to support older people remain in their own homes.

Education Officer/ Advocate

We flew into Dubbo in the early evening of Tuesday 14 October after a huge 23 cm downpour of rain had happened that day. There was a clear hint of moisture in the warm night air as we headed through town to our accommodation. On Wednesday we met with a small group of Aboriginal Elders at the Aboriginal Medical Centre. On Thursday we ran a Seminar at the Dubbo RSL for more than 40 senior community members who were most interested in issues such as aged care accommodation alternatives, Guardianship, Power of Attorney, Wills, Funerals and Advanced Care Directives.
On Friday afternoon we spent a hectic and enjoyable afternoon at the Carers Expo meeting and talking to lots of local residents about TARS and any legal issues they were concerned about. One of us also had the opportunity to talk about TARS and OPLS on the radio for the 2DU Afternoon Show.
We also visited some light, bright and modern aged care facilities to talk with some lovely residents, a few relatives and a number of staff who were very interested to know about how TARS can assist them as they care for their residents. The ACAT team at Lourdes Hospital and the BCS Home Flexi Care staff were also very welcoming and interested to talk about issues that are important for their clients.
Dubbo and the surrounding countryside was looking green and fresh and we met lots of welcoming and friendly "Dubboites" while we were there. Didn’Äôt have time to make a visit to the Western Plains Zoo though, maybe next time.
Jill McDonnell & Margaret Small
Last month Tars staff worked at the Retirement & Lifestyle Expo at Rosehill, this is the fifth year our service has been represented at the largest exp of its kind in NSW. Over the three days of the expo our staff spoke to many interesting people, many looking at services for ageing parents and some for information to assist them selves.
Our new service Older Persons' Legal Service impressed many people who read the information on our display material and stopped to ask questions. One solicitor and one educator were at the expo each day to hand out promotional material and speak to people. Over the 3 days 2,000 people received information from TARS.

Margaret Small (OPLS solicitor) and Margaret Crothers (Aged Care Advocate) visited the Southern Riverina at the end of August.
As well as meeting lots of other Margarets (particularly in Moulemein) they visited Tooleybuc, Moulamein, Barham, Deniliquin and Albury speaking to various community groups and aged care facilities regarding Issues for Seniors and Aged Care.
It was great to meet so many friendly and interested people and to have the opportunity to spread the word about TARS services.
